M.Div. Student Teaching as Adjunct Professor

Feb 20, 2009

With GRTS's Contextual Learning Center ministry residency program beginning its fourth year, we are seeing unique opportunities emerge as students seek to explore their missional callings in an array of ministry contexts. Some serve in large churches, some through ministries in urban settings, some serve with a solo pastor, others are a part of church plants and still others are gaining experience overseas.

Another venue that some of our students are exploring is in the educational context. Jason Myers, an M.Div. student, has been working with Dr. Dwayne Adams, division chair for the Bible, Religion & Ministry Division at Cornerstone University. Over the last three semesters, Jason has assisted Dr. Adams with teaching, grading and advising college students.

This year, Jason is teaching as an adjunct professor for one of Cornerstone's undergraduate hermeneutics courses. They also have plans to attend scholarly conferences together in the upcoming year. Dr. Adams sees the college and seminary as a natural connection for both schools as an emerging generation of scholars and teachers learning and growing into the field of theological education.

"I think GRTS stands out among the rest by giving students the opportunity to gain critical hands-on experience during their time at seminary," says Myers. "I have been given a wonderful opportunity to pursue my career at the same time I am pursuing my studies. The experience of being an adjunct professor while attending seminary is invaluable. Being able to work with Dr. Adams, a true scholar in his own field, has been greatly beneficial for me as a student and as one learning to be a teacher. I appreciate the opportunity that GRTS has provided for students and for the unique internship with Cornerstone University."

This is one of the many exciting residencies our students are undertaking as they prepare for their futures.
