Fagerstrom Releases 14th Book

Oct 23, 2009

Dr. Douglas Fagerstrom, president of Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (GRTS), recently released The Volunteer: A Personal Toolkit for the Dedicated Volunteer, published by BMH Books.

“After recruiting, training and listening to hundreds of volunteers over the past 37 years of ministry, I realized there was an enormous gap in communication, training, encouragement and assumptions between volunteers and their leaders,” Fagerstrom said.

The book makes use of real-life survey results to illustrate principles and includes forms with the same survey questions in the back of the book. It is primarily intended to be a guide for individual volunteers, but it is also useful for leaders, and can be used as a tool for volunteer retreats or training programs.

Cornerstone President Joe Stowell wrote the foreword to the book.

“Thankfully, we now have a great read on what it means to navigate life when your title is ‘volunteer,’” Stowell wrote. “My friend Doug Fagerstrom has made a long overdue contribution to every organization that rides the wave of its voluntary work force.”

Fagerstrom, who has served as president of GRTS since 2003, has published 14 books, including The Ministry Staff Member.

He has also worked as an associate pastor at four churches in three different states and as a ministry consultant.

“(Being published) confirms to our constituency that we are seriously engaged and committed to ministry and our areas of academic or personal discipline,” Fagerstrom said.
